France - Strong growth of digital television expected
Research conducted by the analyst firm NPA estimates that the number of households receiving digital television will reach 6.7 million by the end of 2005 and 19.7 million by 2010.
By the end of 2005, satellite will hold 60% of the total digital market while DTT will represent 15% of the market. ADSL and digital cable will each make up 9% and 16% respectively.

China: 3G cellular Technology update
Chinese telecom officials said this week its version of 3G cellular technology had overcome feasibility problems, opening the door for issuing licenses next year.
Wei Guiming, a senior engineer with the Telecoms Standard Institute of the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Research, was quoted in state-run media as saying "TD-SCDMA technology has been tested and has shown that it can support large-scale network operations."

Qualcomm Integrates Wi-Fi into Cell Phones
Qualcomm today announced that Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets will support Philips' wireless local area network (WLAN) module. This integrated solution will offer connectivity to WLAN networks as well as to existing cellular networks and will feature compatibility with 802.11b and 802.11g protocols on both CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS) networks.

RedKite WiMAX-ready (non-certified) Service Live in London
Following the success of the service in Oxford, Community Internet plc has launched its WiMAX-ready service, RedKite, in central London. The extension of the service to London comes on the back of a successful commercial pilot, which has been operating in Oxford since January.
The RedKite service will initially be available up to 20Mbps but greater bandwidth options are likely to be added to service range in the coming months.

Mobile TV: French CSA authorises four trials
Television on mobile will make its first steps in France with simultaneous implementation of four experiments. September 13, 2005, the higher Council of audio-visual (CSA) authorized four industrial consortia to launch tests of services of reception of television and radio on mobile terminals in Paris area, for durations going from six to nine months.

Dutch Mobile TV pilot on air in Amsterdam
Ijsselstein, the Netherlands - Especially for this years' ICB, Nozema Services, together with Nokia and Elti has made the DVB-H service bouquet, used in the Dutch Mobile TV pilot in the city of The Hague, also available in and around the Amsterdam RAI exhibition centre. From 8-13 September DVB-H demonstrations are held at various stands, including those of Digitag, Nokia, Elti and DVB.

Launch of world-first high power DVB-H trial in Sydney The Bridge Networks and Telstra have combined their expertise to launch Australias first trial of DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld) technology today.
The launch was conducted by Lyn Maddock, Acting Chair, The Australian Communications and Media Authority. The major content provider for the trial will be FOXTEL along with ABC, SBS, Nine Network Australia, Turner (CNNi, Boomerang), SKY Channel (Racing)

Europe Opens Spectrum for Wireless Broadband
This week, the European Commission (EC) in Brussels gave the okay for enabling use of 5GHz spectrum (specifically, the bands between 5150-5350 MHz and 5470-5725 MHz) for license-free use with wireless networks (what the EC calls RLANs, or radio LANs). The move will allow broadband Internet usage in the 25 member states of the European Union (EU) to "become faster and more widespread," according to a statement.
